Donate to Extra Life!
Bright light! Bright light! The holiday season has drawn to a close this year and we have one last holiday movie we're going to talk about with Kent Fellure from the Ritual Misery podcast, and the movie is Gremlins. While this story may be a very simple story to follow, we explain why it's still a fantastic story and why sometimes the best movies are often the simple ones. Plus, find out the one scene in this movie that completely messes with the flow of the story, seems out of place and leaves both of us scratching our heads on why it's included and there seems to be a very glaring plot hole in one of the Mogwai rules, when can the Mogwai eat again after midnight has passed?
Episode 55: Die Hard 2
The Cinemavention podcast will be recorded LIVE at 3:30pm EST on December 31 as a part of the Diamond Club New Year's Eve Streamathon! We'll be raising money for sick kids and making sure no one has to spend New Year's Eve alone for 27 hours ringing in the New Year in every time zone!
What do you call that shit? Self defense. It was 2 years ago today that the Cinemavention podcast began by discussing the movie Die Hard with Anthony Lemos as the guest. Today we return to the franchise that started it all by discussing the movie Die Hard 2 and how the bureaucracy of the cops getting in the way of John McClane is very frustrating and annoying but also very necessary to the story, we explain why. Plus, there is a reason that the church is the command center for the bad guys that you may have missed and we have to ask the question, is Die Hard 2 a Christmas movie?
Episode 54: The Santa Clause
You look pretty good for your age. Thanks, but I'm seeing someone in wrapping. Our holiday movie watching season rolls on and the creator of the modern version of Showbot.tv, Preston Monroe is here to talk about the movie The Santa Clause. We go over the intricacies of this movie's portrayal of Santa Claus and how this movie walks the line very well between portraying Santa Claus as real and Charlie having doubt about Santa's existence. Plus, Preston's office Christmas parties aren't as crazy as a butt on a copy machine but he's had some with very drunk coworkers and Santa falls off the roof of a house so easily and doesn't even have a fire proof suit, what are the elf researchers in the Santa Clause universe supposed to be doing exactly?
Episode 53: Elf
Bye Buddy. Hope you find your dad. Continuing our holiday movie watching, this week we are joined by regular Game Night contributor Dolan Moles to talk about the movie Elf and how this movie is celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. Episode 52: Home Alone
Keep the change, ya filthy animal. It's the month of December which means it's time to cover holiday movies here on Cinemavention and we begin with the film Home Alone and Samuel Lewis of The Samcast Network is here to talk about it. This movie has arguably stood the test of time and is the most successful Christmas movie in the box office. It would take 21 years for this movie to be dethroned as the highest grossing live-action comedy film, not just Christmas live-action comedy films. Why is this movie so timeless? Plus, Willie believes that Buzz's apology to Kevin isn't sincere and has modern technology made it impossible to remake this film?
Episode 51: Napoleon Dynamite
Your mom goes to college. We are joined by both Anthony Lemos and Kent Fellure from the Ritual Misery podcast and the Diamond Club Streamathon to talk about the film Napoleon Dynamite. There are people who say that there is no point to this movie, Willie disagrees with that opinion and says that there is. We answer the question of what the point of Napoleon Dynamite really is once and for all. Plus, we talk about how this movie is so accurate for its time down to the technology, the school atmosphere and even Napoleon's home, except for Kip and Lafawnduh's online relationship that somehow isn't a catfish and what exactly is the point of class president elections in school, is it just a pretty title?

Episode 48: Airplane!
Have you ever seen a grown man naked? Clyde Harvey from The VOD Squad is here to talk about the movie Airplane! and how this entire movie is an exact parody of the film Zero Hour down to the writers using the exact same script just with a few modifications. With that in mind, is it still necessary now to watch Zero Hour after watching this film? Plus, we go over our favorite jokes and references in this movie and does Microsoft Flight Simulator count as flying experience?
Episode 47: Dr. Strangelove
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room. We are joined by Allen Roth and Tom DiGianvittorio to talk about the movie Dr. Strangelove and how the Cold War theme of this movie is an interesting watch in 2022 with the Ukraine war happening. We compare the two wars and talk about what's changed between the two. Plus, find out the movie prop that almost got the movie crew in trouble with the US government and the one real life tragedy that changed a single word in the movie.
Episode 46: Idiocracy
Welcome to Costco. I love you. Regular Game Night contributor Brian Kofford is here to help us celebrate the midterm elections here in the US by talking about the movie Idiocracy and how it serves as a cautionary tale for the state of our country's current politics but it didn't use to be that way, how exactly did we get this divisive in the US? Plus, you could technically classify this as a time travel movie and we talk about the things that they might have guessed correctly a little too soon and no disrespect to Maya Rudolph but what is the purpose of Rita being involved in this military hibernation project at all?
Episode 45: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Sally is the only sane person in this insane asylum! This week we are covering the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas with Stephanie Cafferty and Kim aka Wondermom and we discuss how this movie brings back the nostalgia that the Millennials are craving and why it's fun to relive your old childhood movies and TV shows. Plus, Sally is not the lovable character everyone thinks she is on the surface and while she may be the one who's captured, we talk about the messed up things she does to her creator. Is she the bad guy? And we ask the most important question about this movie, is Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie?
Episode 44: Hackers
Hack the Planet! We are joined by regular Game Night contributor Jeffrey Sax to discuss the movie Hackers and we get into how Jeff got into technology and how it led to him owning his own network and computer security company. Plus, we speculate whether you can still be arrested by the federal government if you don't hack across state lines as Phreak kept claiming and did this movie predict ransomware?
Episode 43: Halloween (1978)
Shit! I have a place for that. Stephanie Cafferty makes a triumphant return to the show to talk about the movie Halloween and whether continuity is the Achilles' heel of this entire movie. Plus, find out why Willie's major problems with the movie all have to do with Annie, but it's not the character herself and Michael Myers gets his eye poked by both a knitting needle and a coat hanger and he gets shot so many times yet still survives, is Michael Myers superhuman?
Episode 42: Saw
First dead body I've ever seen. Look different in real life. They don't move. Samuel Lewis of The Samcast Network is here and he's never seen the movie Saw before but there's a good reason why, he's representing a movie watcher who doesn't usually like watching horror films and it's Willie's job to convince him to watch it. This movie was a controversial pick to discuss on Cinemavention and we will be spoiling this movie like we always do, but it's highly encouraged for you to listen to this episode even if you haven't seen the movie and especially if you're hesitant to watch it. Willie breaks down the entire movie for Sam and we discuss whether the trailer is an accurate portrayal of this movie. Plus, we are joined by a roundtable of guests who joined the watch party for this film to give their thoughts about the movie and what if Saw is not even a horror film at all and instead is a who-done-it film or a murder mystery film instead?

Plus, did you know that this movie was supposed to be filmed in Michigan and the crew almost got hypothermia in the Tennessee cabin they did end up choosing for the film location and is it better to watch Evil Dead II before The Evil Dead?

If you wanna waste your life...then you can just drop fucking dead. *thud* Regular Game Night contributor Dolan Moles is back to begin our spooky month of movies, beginning with Final Destination. Did you know that this movie was originally written as an X-Files episode? Was it a mistake to stretch a TV episode into a full length feature film instead? Plus, an alternate ending seems to suggest that Alex and Clear were supposed to end up together but we discuss why that doesn't belong in this movie and there's questions about the order of who dies in the movie, but was Alex even supposed to die at all in the first place?
Episode 39: Grease
Tell me about it stud. Samuel Lewis of The Samcast Network rejoins us, this time to talk about the musical turned movie Grease and how this movie brings back so many memories of previous movies we’ve covered on this show as well as many high school memories. How accurately did this movie portray a typical high school year and does it hold up today? Plus, what is the message that this story is trying to send and is it the right one? RIP Olivia Newton-John.
Episode 38: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Open the pod bay doors, HAL. I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that. We are joined by Matthew Ross from The VOD Squad to discuss the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. This movie doesn't have any of the fancy CGI of today's movies, and we discuss whether the practical effects of this movie still work 50-60 years later? Plus, Matt and Willie debate whether the pacing actually helps the story or not and we compare IBM's Watson to HAL 9000, a supercomputer that won a rap battle against Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. I promise it makes sense.
Episode 37: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal. Sarah Lane from the Daily Tech News Show and Have Such A Good Day joins us to talk about Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and we talk about how this movie exposes how sexist news stations in the 70s used to be through the use of comedy, but do the jokes still land in 2022? Plus, Sarah tells us how she got into broadcasting and how playing around with a camera and microphone as a kid got her to where she is today and it turns out there's more truth to the news station brawl scene than you might realize at first.
